STEM Stars

STEM Stars is a program designed to challenge students beyond the classroom setting. Good problems can inspire curiosity about goals of the problem and what could be applied to solving it. Sometimes the problem requires some abstract thinking and coming up with a creative solution. It is hoped that in accepting the challenge of problem solving, students and their parents will be led to explore new horizons. This program is not intended to replace any aspect of the school curriculum, but to offer additional challenges to interested students. Participation is optional, and is open to all K-5 students.

The worksheets will be sent home every month in the Thursday folders for completion and are due within two weeks after they are received.

Your role in STEM Stars is to encourage and facilitate problem solving. During the two-week time frame, allow time for your child to think about each problem. You may need to read and explain the problem to your child. Feel free to suggest a strategy for solving the problem or listen as your child shares his or her thinking. In order for this program to be effective, the students must consider each problem and fully participate in the process. Once your family completes the problem, please send in the project or a photo of your results to the STEM Lab so that it can be displayed in the school.

Thank you for encouraging your child to embark on this STEM adventure!

Students that complete 6 of the 8 projects will receive a STEM pin on Awards Day in May.
